My background has been in Security, Fire and EMS. Unfortunately in recent years I have let myself get way out of shape. I can testify, from experience, that responding to emergency situations was much easier and far better when I was in shape. In the last few weeks I have committed myself to taking control of my lack of physical fitness. It is obvious to me that in order to be better prepared for any emergency situation, I must be in good shape. I challenge everyone to truthfully examine your own physical condition. If a person is going to be able to care for anyone else in the event of an emergency, they must first be able to respond. Losing weight and gaining strength are my personal goals.

Some questions that come to mind when considering what a person needs to do to physically prepare themselves might be:
  • Do I have enough body strength to assist someone that may be trapped or injured and may need to be moved?
  • If I get totally winded walking up one flight of stairs, how can I assist someone that may be up or down stairs or even in a ditch?
  • Can I lift debris off of an injured or trapped person?
  • Am I in good enough shape to perform CPR for several minutes if needed to?
  • If I need to walk/run out of a situation, am I able to do so? What if I had to walk several miles in an evacuation? Could I do it?

Of course, there are many, many more questions that you could ask yourself. Just think for a moment about a variety of emergency situations and what you may be required to do. Ask yourself, "what if"? What if this or that happened? What types of physical stress might be put on me? Can I perform tasks that could be required to save myself, my family or my friends? You might be surprised at your own answers. It was my answers that have convinced me to change what I am doing so that I can lose weight, gain strength and be better prepared for myself, my family, my friends and my community.

Vitamins, supplements and eating properly are all a part of getting into good physical shape. Exercise is also one of the essential components. There are no magic pills that will do it all for you. We are all a product of the decisions we make. We can choose to eat properly, exercise and take appropriate vitamins and supplements. Each one of these play an important role in proper physical fitness. I recently read a question asked by a nationally known fitness expert and trainer that really made me think about weight loss. He asked, if you just lose weight, will you really like the way you look? Getting fit isn't just losing weight. If you don't do some type of exercise such as aerobic and resistance training will you like the results? When it comes to emergency preparedness, will just losing weight accomplish what you want? Do you need to increase strength? Do you need to increase your aerobic capacity? For me, I know the answers. Be true to yourself. Answer the questions honestly. Take action.

Frequently the action part is the difficult part. I have found that having the right mental attitude is required to get motivated and put your desires into action. Below is some information that may help you. It has helped me already.
